Salina Municipal Park
February 10, 2020
The design proposal merges elements of landscape design in the urban context of the Salina Municipal park in Larnaca, Cyprus. It develops a holistic approach to the area of intervention which includes the reconfiguration/reshaping of the landform, green areas, access points and circulation, and areas of leisure and public activities.
The area of intervention is a natural terrain with level variations spanning from 1 to 2 meters. The vegetation on-site primarily includes palm trees and pine trees. The park is next to two heritage buildings on its western edge. The City’s Municipal Garden is located to the northeast.
We reshape the inclined levels through terraces. These terraces serve as the main geometric feature of this design proposal. In more detail, we form the boundary of the lowest level in the area by following the slopes’ edges. Simultaneously, we take into account the existing trees in the area. Our geometric hills divide the area into sections that can accommodate a variety of uses.
The proposed design effectively incorporates the existing vegetation. Additionally, we enrich the area with new plant species that are compatible with the site. Specifically we propose rows of trees for the eastern and western sides, as well as for the central medians. This ensures adequate shading particularly during the summer season.
