Music Record Cover Design

This project is a sound data visualization for the design of the cover of a music record. The record is currently distributed by the More Mars online record label in Greece. You may check out the rest of my music releases under my music moniker Broken Synths on Discogs.

The design of the cover is a sound data visualization. The sound data are the six distinct tracks of the music record. That is, each cover visualizes a different time fragment for each of the tracks in the record.

By using algorithmic procedures, the project analyzes sound through Fourier transform using the sound library of Processing API. Fourier transform provides the waveform analysis, thus providing an “oscilloscope” for each music track. The covers are temporal fragments or frames capturing different moments of each waveform. The covers appear to have similar patterns, but in reality they differ temporally. In other words, each cover copy represents an image of a “temporal sound variation regulated down to the tenth of a second.”

For the first release of the record, there are 300 distinct cover designs.
