Multimedia Art Installation – BJCEM

“Logic and Dissonance” is a multimedia art installation on view at the 16th Young Artists Biennial (BJCEM) in Italy in 2013.

Project Description

The project considers the notion of “error” as a design tool. Errors here are traces of a near-mechanical process that deviates from accuracy through user interaction. It involves the design of a musical concept machine that is based on the design of vintage tape machines. Specifically, the schematic design of the tape machine is augmented with the following functions: play, fast forward, rewind, musical score writing. The new version allows users to forward and rewind the tape’s stylus in real time, thus creating acoustic and textual errors on paper.

Materials

The artwork incorporates images, audio, video and digital fabrication. Specifically, the conceptual machine is represented through physical drawings and functional diagrams as well as a real scale digitally fabricated model. Moreover, a curated video footage narrates the new machine’s functionality. It showcases the movement of the machine’s stylus and the visual outputs (i.e., scores) it produces. A series of printed scores depict different outputs of the machine, which are themselves part of the artwork.
